Eagles, Bears, and Whales, Oh My!
Well, it has been a while since our last post in Ketchikan. We are now at the Wrangell Library using their public access computers. From Ketchican, we went to a place called Walker Bay which is inside of the Misty Fiords National Monument. What a beautiful place it is!! On the way here, we saw our first whales of the trip. Not sure if they were greys or humpbacks as we only got a glimpse of them and them they vanished! The next day was spent continuing on up the Behm Canal to a place called Yes Bay. From here, we went to a regular stop over for Alaska veterans. It is called Meyers Chuck and is a sleepy little community with one gallery which they will open if you give them a call on the free public phone. From here, we went to Thoms Place which was a great anchorage which had a fantastic view of 5 grizz;y bears (3 cubs). Glad we were on the boat when we saw them. Ask Ann about her Kayak experience here. It was a beautiful day for a kayak trip and when we got about 1/2 mile from the boat, the winds came up. She was yelling at the Wind Gods for a long time getting back to the boat!! She was a tired, not so happy camper. We left Thoms Place this morning and ran about 25 miles to Wrangell and thats the story so far. As to our plans, we have decided to hit Petersburg on the way home. As such, we will probably head more west toward Kuiu Island, Chatham Strait, and to Sitka via Peril Strait. It is about 150 miles and this will be our last chance to communicate until we get to Sitka, we think. So, thats our story (so far) and we are sticking to it!!

So great to hear from you. You have been on my mind all this week - wondering what you were up to. BEars and Whales - what more can you ask for and time to loaf. Glad you are still getting your exercise - kayaking with and against the wind. I heave heard of people yelling at the Wind Gods, but in my experience it has been for lack of wind! But then we are talking about "Rag Pickers" here and not Power Boaters! WEather here is nuts - sun and warm for a short period and then rain and cold. Can't seem to decide what time of year it is.
We leave in two weeks bound fpor the Broughtons - will keep you updated on where and when. Maybe we will have the o pportunity to connect.
Take CAre and stay Safe _ watch the Bears!

Hi Folks...
Might not get this message beore you get to Sitka. Interesting that you have decided to head for Chatham via Sumner Strait. If you go through Decision Passage be sure the weather is right for you as you will be facing the big blue Pacific. Some wonderful anchorages in Tebenkof Bay Wilderness, or an interesting community across the strait at Port Alexander. If you head toward Fredrick Strait via Rocky Pass, make sure the tide is high through Rocky. Fredrick is where the Humbacks feed. You will have fun amongst the giants.
Be sure you stop and enjoy Red Bluff and Baranoff Warm Springs. Georgeous inlets, and a nice community in Baranoff with a pleasant hiking trail to the lake up above.
Appleton Cove is a great place to overnight in Peril Strait. There is a cabin there and a guest book to sign.
Deep bay is also a safe anchorage justb before Sergio Narrows if you have to wait for slack. On the way to Sitka, make a left turn at the end of Neva Passage, enter Kristof SOund and spend a night in DeGoff Bay. Quiet, with lots of birds and bears! Easy ride into Sitka in the A.M.
Forgive my reminiscing! I do envy you your adventures!

Sorry...the turn is to the right out of Neva into Kristof....a left turn takes you into Olga Passage! Need to watch the big ferries through thoses two narrow passages...they usually announce ahead their position and ask that you answer back to let them know where you are. Very courteous.
Peter
David and Ann - had a great time in Sitka. Leaving tomorrow for Seattle....lots of Halibut, Salmon and some ling cod. The wind should be moderating a bit....have a blast in Sitka.
